AI agent for AEO that connects to Google Search Console and HubSpot so AI citations tie back to pipeline

No AEO tool today can tie one AI citation to one HubSpot deal, because answer engines do not pass the prompt or the citation along with the click. What you can build is close enough to defend: Search Console for AI-heavy queries, AI referral visits recorded as their own source in HubSpot or GA4, those contacts followed to deals, and a fixed prompt set whose citation trend you read beside that pipeline. An agent then automates the measuring and the monthly join.
Why can't a citation be tied straight to a deal?
Three gaps sit between "ChatGPT cited our pricing page" and "this deal came from AI search":
Google's AI surfaces look like normal search. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate AI filter, according to Google's AI features guide. In analytics and CRMs they land as organic search.
App traffic often has no referrer. Peec AI's own documentation warns that visits from mobile AI apps and links without a referrer show up as Direct, and calls its AI referral figure "the minimum AI-driven traffic captured" (Peec AI docs).
Most influence never clicks. A buyer reads the answer, remembers your name, and searches for you a week later. That visit is branded search or direct.
So the honest goal is not one-to-one attribution. It is two trends that move together: citation share on the questions you track, and pipeline from sources AI plausibly drove.
What does Search Console show about AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Search Console is still the only first-party view of Google's AI surfaces. Use it this way:
Queries that trigger AI answers. Long, question-shaped and comparison queries are the most likely. Group them with a regex filter on the Queries tab, for example questions starting with how, what, which, best or vs.
Click-through rate against position. A page holding position 2 with falling CTR on question queries is often losing clicks to an AI Overview.
Branded search growth. Rising impressions for your brand name are the cleanest sign that people heard of you somewhere else, including in AI answers.
What it cannot tell you: whether you were cited in the AI Overview, or which prompt led to a click.
How does HubSpot record visits from ChatGPT and other assistants?
HubSpot has a dedicated AI Referrals traffic source. A visit is classed as AI Referrals when a UTM parameter or the referring domain is a recognised AI platform, including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Meta AI, Mistral, Poe and Grok. Only AI-specific domains such as gemini.google.com count; ordinary Google and Bing searches stay under Organic search (HubSpot knowledge base).
That gives you a chain you can report on: AI Referrals visit, contact created with that original source, deal associated with the contact. HubSpot also notes it may reprocess past data, so historical source figures can shift. Snapshot your monthly numbers.
How do you connect the pieces, step by step?
Fix your prompt set first. Choose 30 to 60 buyer questions and keep them stable for a quarter. Changing prompts mid-quarter breaks the trend you will compare against pipeline.
Connect Search Console to your AEO tool or agent, so query and click data sit next to citation data.
Split AI referrals in GA4. Create a custom channel group with a regex on source for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, placed above Referral.
Check HubSpot's AI Referrals source is populating on new contacts. Add a hidden form field for the landing page URL.
Add a self-reported field. "How did you first hear about us?" with "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as an option. In B2B, self-reported attribution often catches what referrers miss.
Build three HubSpot reports: contacts by original source (AI Referrals), deals created from those contacts, and deals where the self-reported field says AI.
Join monthly. Put citation share for each topic beside AI referral contacts, AI-sourced deals and branded search impressions for the same month.
Mark the dates of site changes so you can read a movement beside a fix, without claiming the fix caused it.
Which AEO tools connect to Search Console, GA4 or HubSpot?
What each vendor's own pages say, checked 24 October 2026.
AthenaHQ
What it connects: Google Search Console (queries become tracked prompts, clicks and impressions shown alongside) and GA4 (traffic, engagement and conversions next to AI results), plus Looker Studio and CMS publishing (AthenaHQ integrations).
Pipeline claim: its software demo-attribution page talks about tracing demo requests to AI touchpoints, without describing the mechanism.
HubSpot: not listed on its integrations page.
Pricing: Starter $295 a month with 3,600 credits (AthenaHQ plans).
Peec AI
What it connects: GA4 for AI Referrals, including conversions from GA4 key events, plus CDN and server logs for AI crawler visits, a Looker Studio connector and an API.
HubSpot and Search Console: not among the integrations its docs list.
Pricing: the pricing page showed no figures when we fetched it (Peec AI pricing).
Profound
What it connects: Google Analytics and CDNs such as Cloudflare, Fastly and Vercel, plus WordPress (Profound pricing).
HubSpot and Search Console: not named on its pricing or home page.
Pricing: free trial; Enterprise custom.
HubSpot AEO
What it connects: tracks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for 25 prompts; HubSpot says CRM data is already connected when it comes with Marketing Hub Pro or Enterprise (HubSpot AEO).
Search Console: not mentioned.
Pricing: $50 a month, or $45 billed annually.
Semrush and Ahrefs
Both track AI answers next to classic SEO data: Semrush One from $199 a month (Semrush pricing), Ahrefs Brand Radar from $199 a month as an add-on (Ahrefs pricing). Neither pricing page describes a HubSpot pipeline link.
The pattern: Search Console and GA4 are common; a native AI-citation-to-HubSpot-deal link is not something any of these pages claim. Plan to do the final join in HubSpot or a spreadsheet.
What should go in the monthly pipeline report?
Keep it to one page:
citation share and mention share on the tracked prompt set, against last month;
AI referral sessions and contacts, with conversion rate;
deals and pipeline value from AI Referrals contacts, and from the self-reported field;
branded search impressions from Search Console;
the fixes published that month.

Which mistakes break this attribution?
Treating AI Overviews clicks as AI referrals. They arrive as Google organic. Count them through Search Console instead.
Changing the prompt set every month. The citation trend becomes meaningless.
Last-touch only. Deals in B2B have long cycles; AI is usually an early touch. Look at original source, not just the converting session.
Ignoring direct traffic growth. App referrals often show as direct.
Claiming causation. Show both trends and the fix dates, and let leadership draw the line.
How long before the numbers mean anything?
Give it a full quarter. B2B deals often take months to close, so pipeline from AI Referrals contacts lags the citation trend. In the first month, check only that the plumbing works: AI referral sessions appear in GA4, new contacts carry the AI Referrals source, and the self-reported field gets answers. In the second, compare citation share on each topic with AI referral contacts. By the end of the quarter you have enough deals to see whether the two lines move together. If your volumes are small, report counts and ranges rather than percentages, so one deal does not swing the story.
Where does Nagent's DRIS fit?
DRIS is the AI search and answer engine visibility agent on Nagent's Marketing team. We make Nagent, so here is exactly what it connects to.
Search Console: the first pull reads 90 days, then daily. Rank movers and coverage gaps come from your own data.
Google Analytics 4: sessions and conversions by source, with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude split out as AI-search referrals.
Answer engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, plus Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, on a prompt set fixed per account so trends compare.
Reports such as a weekly digest, a monthly report and a Day-75 ROI report.
What it does not do: read HubSpot deals. Nagent connects HubSpot through Composio for agents' actions, but DRIS does not join citations to HubSpot pipeline today, and it reads traffic by source, not by landing page. Use HubSpot's AI Referrals reports for the deal side.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I track ChatGPT and Perplexity referral traffic in GA4?
Create a custom channel group with a regex on session source for the AI assistants' domains, and place it above Referral so those sessions get their own channel. Mark your lead forms as key events so conversions show.
Does AI Overviews traffic show separately in Search Console?
No. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate filter.
Do AI SEO agents connect to Google Search Console and propose site fixes for human approval?
Some do. AthenaHQ connects Search Console and GA4; DRIS reads Search Console and proposes fixes that a person approves before anything goes live.
Can HubSpot show which deals came from ChatGPT?
Partly. Contacts whose original source is AI Referrals can be followed to deals. Visits from AI apps without a referrer, and people who searched for you later, will not show as AI.
