What is FOLIO from Nagent?

FOLIO is Nagent's AI long-form publications lead. It sits on the Content team under CREA, the AI Content Chief of Staff, and turns documents you pick from your Knowledge Hub into a chaptered, illustrated publication: an ebook, a research report, a playbook, a listicle or a comparison. Six stage agents read the sources, design the outline, draft each chapter, illustrate and render PDF and DOCX. A person presses Promote before the book goes anywhere.

We make Nagent, so read this as the maker's own explainer. Everything below matches the public FOLIO page and the product as it ships today, including what FOLIO does not do.

What problem is FOLIO built to solve?

Most B2B teams already own the raw material for a good ebook: product docs, research, case studies, webinar transcripts, sales decks. What they lack is the time to turn a folder of material into a structured, sourced, designed document that someone would trade an email address for.

General AI writing tools help with the typing but not with that job. Paste a brief into a chat window and you get fluent text that is not tied to your documents. Ask for twelve chapters and the outline drifts, chapters repeat each other and the facts stop matching your sources. Then someone still has to lay it out.

FOLIO is built for the whole chain: from "these are the documents we trust" to "here is the PDF and the editable DOCX". It writes from your own material: the documents a person chooses lead, the rest of your Knowledge Hub and your facts sheet fill in, and it stops before publishing.

How does FOLIO work, step by step?

FOLIO is a lead with six stage agents under it. FOLIO directs the work; each stage agent owns one step, so the record shows which agent did what.

  1. Choose the book and its sources. On FOLIO's own surface, a person picks a book type, a chapter count and whether to illustrate, then chooses source documents from the Knowledge Hub. The estimate shows before you submit, and the submit button stays disabled until it has resolved.

  2. Ingestor. Reads the chosen documents into one body of source text, labelled by document, then searches the whole Knowledge Hub once with the book's title and notes and adds the workspace facts sheet. A book is refused only when nothing was picked, the facts sheet is empty and the search finds nothing.

  3. Architect. Designs the chapter architecture, foreword, executive summary and cover brief, within the chapter range the book type allows.

  4. Writer. Drafts one chapter at a time. Before each chapter, the paragraphs of your documents are ranked against that chapter's title, tagline, summary and key points, so the chapter is written from the material it is about rather than the first pages of the pile.

  5. Artist. Picks up to three moments in a chapter that warrant a visual and generates each one. If a visual fails, it is dropped and the prose stays.

  6. Compositor. Composes chapters and illustrations into a PDF and a DOCX, both downloadable from the finished book.

  7. Publisher. Only after a person presses Promote on the finished book: it files the PDF as a knowledge asset, and as a gated lead magnet when asked.

The chain from reading sources to the rendered files runs on its own once you submit. Publishing is never part of that chain.

What can FOLIO write?

The New book form offers these types: Thought Leadership, Operator's Playbook, Research Report, Brand Book, Technical Handbook, Onboarding Guide, Case Study Collection, Pitch Narrative, Essay Collection, Non-Fiction Book, Listicle and Comparison.

The type sets the shape and the chapter range. Most business types take 6 to 12 chapters. A Pitch Narrative is shorter, at 4 to 6. Book-length types such as Non-Fiction Book and Essay Collection allow up to 20.

Two types behave differently:

  • Listicle. A numbered list, written as punchy items that each make one clear claim.

  • Comparison. You name two to six subjects. A subject backed by one of your own documents is written from that document and never researched on the web. A subject with none of your documents behind it can be researched on the web, and the writer is told to cite every factual claim in a comparison to a numbered source.

What sources can FOLIO read?

FOLIO reads documents from the Knowledge Hub, the same store your other Nagent agents answer from. You add material there by pasting text, fetching a public https page or uploading a file. The adding knowledge guide lists the file types: Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls, .csv), PDF, Markdown, plain text and JSON, up to 25 MB each.

Two limits matter in practice:

  • No OCR. A scanned PDF that is only pictures of pages is refused. Export a text PDF or paste the text.

  • Text, not pictures. Nagent reads the text out of a file. For a deck that means the slide text; charts, screenshots and speaker notes are not read, so put key numbers and the spoken argument in the slide text or a companion document before you upload.

Will a FOLIO book sound like our brand?

FOLIO writes in the voice built from your brand guideline, which is optional. When one is set, its banned claims, banned visuals and mandatory items are placed ahead of its tone. A long guideline therefore loses style before it loses a rule. The same voice shapes the outline, the chapters and the illustration plans.

That ordering matters for long documents. Tone drift by chapter five is annoying; a banned claim in chapter five is a compliance problem. Our post on why AI content breaks down without a voice layer goes deeper on the voice side.

Who approves what, and can FOLIO publish on its own?

No. FOLIO stops at the rendered PDF and DOCX. On the finished book, a person presses Promote.

The rules behind that:

  • Each stage declares the trust it needs to run without a person. Reading sources needs the least; outlining, drafting, illustrating and rendering need more; publishing needs the most.

  • When an agent is not yet trusted with an action, an approval request is written and nothing runs. A stage that is queued for a person or refused stops the chain.

  • Publishing is the only FOLIO stage declared to reach outside the platform.

  • FOLIO runs on no schedule. There is no timed trigger, because an unattended chain that spends per chapter is the wrong first thing to automate.

  • FOLIO's actions are not yet scored for promotion, so none is proposed today. A person raises or lowers what FOLIO and each worker may do alone, and every change is written to the audit log.

This sits inside Nagent's wider autonomy ladder (L1 Observe, L2 Assist, L3 Operate, L4 Represent, L5 Lead), explained on the platform page. Agents start at L2 Assist, and a person approves every customer-facing step below L5.

What does a FOLIO book cost?

Nagent meters agent work in credits, not per seat for each tool. FOLIO quotes its own estimate before you submit, and the approval card names the figure for that book.

As a guide, a 12-chapter illustrated book is estimated at about 1,570 credits. Most of that is illustration: each chapter pays for an illustration plan and up to three images. The same 12 chapters without illustrations come to roughly 230 credits. A comparison adds web research for each subject that none of your documents covers. For scale, Nagent's pricing page puts an AEO page audit at about 10 credits and a rendered video at about 700. See pricing for the plans and their monthly credit allowances.

Two budget controls apply. FOLIO has a long-form budget of its own, separate from blogs, so a book and a blog never starve each other. Every model, image and research call checks it first, so a book stops at the chapter or image that would cross the cap rather than overspending.

How is FOLIO different from other AI ebook tools?

Fairly, other tools are strong at parts of this job:

  • Jasper has an ebook creator workflow that combines a Research Agent, an Ebook Outline Agent, chapter drafting in its Canvas editor and scaling across segments in Grid. It can draw on uploaded Knowledge assets and Brand Voice. Its page does not describe rendering a designed PDF.

  • Gamma generates visual documents from a prompt or an uploaded Word doc, PDF or Google Doc, and exports to PDF, PNG or PowerPoint; its help centre says Word export is not supported on any plan. It is design-led and fast.

  • Canva gives you templates, layout control and AI writing help inside Canva Docs. You bring the words and the structure.

FOLIO's difference is the combination: sources limited to documents you chose, ranked passages per chapter, brand rules ahead of tone, illustrations, a rendered PDF and DOCX, and a person's Promote before anything leaves.

What FOLIO does not do

Plainly:

  • It does not write from the open web, except to research a comparison subject that none of your documents covers.

  • It does not publish or distribute. No auto-posting, no emailing the book to a list. Promote files it as a knowledge asset or gated lead magnet; distribution is your call.

  • It does not read images in your files, and it cannot read scanned PDFs.

  • It does not run on a schedule.

  • It is not a page-layout tool. If your designer wants to restyle the book, the DOCX is the editable starting point.

  • A book cannot be started from the Content room. It is created on FOLIO's own surface; from the room, FOLIO's workers act only on a book that already exists.

Where does FOLIO fit in Nagent?

Nagent is multiplayer AI for growth: people and AI agents in one shared context, delivering the number. FOLIO sits in CREA's Content room alongside RUPA (images), Alpha (video), LANDON (landing pages) and your team's people. A finished book can feed the rest of the work: LANDON can draft a landing page with the lead form a page needs before it can go live, and leads land in Nagent's own Leads. A person presses Publish there too.

If long-form is your main need, start with the Content team. The FOLIO page shows the stage agents and the New book form; CREA's page shows the rest of the Content team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FOLIO publish the book automatically?

No. The chain stops at the rendered PDF and DOCX. A person presses Promote on the finished book, and only then does the Publisher file it as a knowledge asset or a gated lead magnet.

What file formats does FOLIO produce?

PDF and DOCX, both downloadable from the finished book. The PDF is what Promote files as a knowledge asset or gated lead magnet; the DOCX is the editable copy.

Can FOLIO write a full chaptered ebook from our own documents, with illustrations?

Yes. It writes each chapter against the passages of your chosen documents that rank highest for that chapter, and the Artist adds up to three illustrations per chapter when illustrations are on. Accuracy still needs a person's read before Promote.

What happens if a FOLIO book hits its budget?

Every model, image and research call checks FOLIO's long-form budget first. A book stops at the chapter or image that would cross the cap, instead of finishing and billing you later.

Is FOLIO a separate product?

No. FOLIO is a team lead on Nagent's Content team, reporting to CREA. It comes with the Content team rather than as its own subscription.

Canva ebook maker vs AI ebook generator that writes from our source documents

Canva is a design tool: brilliant for layout once the words exist. An AI ebook generator that writes from your source documents does the writing and structure. Which to use, when to use both, and what each costs in time and money.

Content

What is an AI ebook generator and how does it work?

An AI ebook generator turns a topic or your own documents into a chaptered ebook: it outlines, drafts each chapter, adds visuals and exports a file. How each stage works, the four kinds of tool, and where they go wrong.
