Dynamic creative vs flexible ad format on Meta

Dynamic creative and the flexible format both build Meta ads from your assets, at different levels. Dynamic creative is switched on for an ad set, holds a single ad, mixes up to 10 images and 10 videos with up to 5 headlines, texts, descriptions and calls to action, and reports by asset. The flexible format works inside one ad, groups images, videos and text, and lets Meta choose the format for each person. Use dynamic creative to learn which pieces work; use flexible to scale a proven concept.
What is dynamic creative on Meta?
Dynamic creative takes the pieces you upload and delivers different combinations of them, learning which combination works best for each impression. Everything below comes from Meta's developer documentation on dynamic creative, read on 24 October 2026.
Where it lives: at the ad set. You turn it on for the ad set, then create one ad that holds the assets.
One ad per ad set: "You can only create one ad per ad set." More dynamic creative ads need more ad sets. The ad set must be empty when you create the ad.
Objectives: sales, engagement, leads, awareness, traffic and app promotion, using auction buying.
Placements: all placements except sponsored messages on Messenger.
Images: each image can have only one crop, used for every placement, and Meta recommends square images.
Deleting: you cannot delete or archive the ad itself; you delete or archive its ad set.
Meta's asset feed options set the limits: up to 10 images, 10 videos, 5 bodies (primary texts), 5 titles (headlines), 5 descriptions, 5 links and 5 calls to action, with a maximum of 30 assets in total.
Reporting. Meta's asset feed insights page lists breakdowns by body, title, description, image, video, call to action, link and ad format. For dynamic creative it says the API shows "only creative-asset level breakdowns", and points to Ads Manager for more.
Nagent's creative strategy lead, HOOK (Beta), writes and checks the assets that go into either format; it has its own section near the end.
What is the flexible ad format on Meta?
The flexible ad format lets you put several images, videos and pieces of text into one ad, and Meta's delivery system "selects the format to show without you specifying one", according to Meta's documentation on the flexible ad format, read on 24 October 2026.
Where it lives: at the ad. Assets sit in creative asset groups inside the ad.
Groups: each group needs at least one image or video; calls to action in a group must be the same type; a group can hold up to 5 texts per text type.
Objectives (API): the developer page lists sales and app promotion as the supported objectives.
Format choice: Meta decides which format a person sees. The page does not explain how that choice is made.
Reporting: the page does not describe reporting for flexible ads. Check what Ads Manager shows in your account before you rely on it for learning.
The developer page does not state a maximum number of images or videos per group, so confirm current limits in Ads Manager.
How do dynamic creative and flexible format compare?
Dynamic creative
Level: ad set setting, one ad per ad set.
What varies: combinations of images or videos with headlines, texts, descriptions, links and calls to action.
Limits: 10 images, 10 videos, 5 of each text field, 30 assets in total.
Format: you choose one ad format per asset feed (single image, carousel, single video or automatic).
Reporting: breakdowns by asset.
Best for: finding which headline, image or text works best within one concept.
Limitation: one ad per ad set means more ad sets and thinner budgets; a whole concept test inside one dynamic creative ad tells you about pieces, not ideas.
Flexible ad format
Level: inside a single ad, alongside other ads in the ad set.
What varies: the format shown, chosen by Meta from the media you group.
Limits: at least one image or video per group and up to 5 texts per text type; other maximums not stated in the developer page.
Format: chosen by Meta per person.
Reporting: not described in the developer page.
Best for: scaling a proven concept across placements without building every format by hand.
Limitation: you learn less about which format or asset did the work, and API support is listed only for sales and app promotion objectives.
When should you use dynamic creative?
To optimise inside a concept you believe in. Give it five headlines and several images that all argue the same angle, and let the asset breakdowns show which pieces pull their weight.
When you need asset-level reporting to feed your next brief.
For objectives the flexible format does not support through the API, such as leads or traffic, if you build through the API.
Avoid putting different concepts into one dynamic creative ad. If image A argues price and headline 3 argues quality, some combinations will make no sense, and the winning combination will not tell you which idea won.
When should you use the flexible ad format?
To scale a winner. Once a concept has proved itself, give Meta the static, the video and the carousel versions and let delivery match format to person.
For sales and app campaigns with many placements, where building each format separately costs time.
When you care more about results than about learning which format did it.
Check your Advantage+ creative settings at the same time. Meta's Advantage+ creative page lists enhancements such as text generation, image expansion and image animation, and says some may be turned on by default. If you need control over exactly what runs, review them.
Can you use either one for creative testing?
Neither is a clean A/B test. Both let the delivery system decide which assets or formats get impressions, so no piece is guaranteed an equal share. For a real test:
Test concepts in separate ad sets or with Meta's A/B test tool, with equal budgets and one variable. Motion's glossary recommends at least 7 days, an even budget split and a success metric chosen in advance.
Use dynamic creative inside the winning concept to find the best headline, text and image.
Use the flexible format to scale the concept once you know it works.
How should you prepare assets for either format?
One concept per ad. Every asset should argue the same reason to buy.
Every combination must be true. Any headline can meet any image. If one headline makes a claim that only one image supports, remove it.
Design for one crop. In dynamic creative each image has one crop for every placement, so keep key text and product inside safe areas.
Mind video shapes. Meta's asset feed options note that for Instagram placements only square or landscape videos are allowed in an asset feed, and square images are recommended.
Name assets clearly so asset-level reports are readable: concept ID, angle, and what the asset is.
What do the setup rules mean for your account structure?
More ad sets. With one dynamic creative ad per ad set, testing several concepts this way multiplies ad sets and splits budget.
Plan for permanence. Because a dynamic creative ad cannot be deleted on its own, keep each ad set tidy and archive it as a unit.
Watch learning. Motion's glossary lists adding or removing ads and budget changes over 20% among the triggers that restart learning, so plan assets before launch rather than editing live.
Where does Nagent fit?
We make Nagent, so this section is ours. Nagent is multiplayer AI for growth: people and AI agents in one shared context, delivering the number. HOOK, in Beta, is the AI ad creative strategy lead on the Marketing team. It writes hook sets per concept and channel pack, and GATE checks every claim against the brand's proof, which matters most for dynamic creative, where any headline can meet any image. PULSE reads ad-level performance from a connected Meta account or an uploaded export and ranks each ad against your own ads over 90 days.
What it does not do: HOOK makes read calls only and never sets up ads. NIA, the AI performance marketing lead, can create a Meta campaign (her Meta ads work is in Beta), but it arrives empty and paused; ad sets, ads and creative, including dynamic creative or flexible format, are built by a person in Ads Manager. See the HOOK page for its scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is dynamic creative being replaced by the flexible ad format?
The Meta developer pages we read on 24 October 2026 document both and do not say that one replaces the other. Ads Manager options change often, so check what your account shows when you build a campaign.
Can I see which combination won in dynamic creative?
Meta's API reports dynamic creative by asset, such as each image, headline or body, rather than by full combination. Its documentation points to Ads Manager for more detailed views.
How many creatives should I put in one Meta ad set?
For dynamic creative, one ad per ad set is the rule, with up to 10 images, 10 videos and 5 of each text field. For standard and flexible ads there is no single right number; give each concept enough budget to reach a stable read.
Does the flexible ad format work for lead campaigns?
Meta's developer page lists sales and app promotion as the objectives it supports through the API. Check Ads Manager for what your account offers on other objectives.
What is Advantage+ creative?
A set of Meta features that use AI to generate and enhance ad variations, such as text generation, image expansion and image animation. Meta says some enhancements may be on by default, so review them if you need control.
